How will UP2US work?

How UP2US will work?

In 2011, UP2US aims to reach of 2.6 million South Africans.

There are three aspects to the UP2US movement:

1. UP2US toolboxes will be distributed to all of the 27 000 schools in South Africa. These contain the multimedia production on DVD, a facilitator guide and a journal that can be photocopied for teachers to use with their learners.

2. Week-long roadshows will take place in four Provinces bringing learners, teachers, principals and community organisations together.

3. A national campaign will be launched targeting the wider public to encourage citizens to take a positive stand and act on behalf of themselves and others.

We are bringing young people in and out of school together in October to help us design.

The UP2US campaign is being designed with young people so that:

-        they get excited by the potential of UP2US

-        they realize they have the power of change

-        They have a voice

-        They are put in the decision-making process

-        We are beginning to create a core hive of young UPstanders to carry the message of the movement

If you have any thoughts or suggestions on how UP2US can spread virally across South Africa, let us know.

What is UP2US?

UP2US aims to create communities of young UPstanders across South Africa who stand up for good, begin to DO things that make a difference in their schools, communities and country and actively spread the message of UP2US by encouraging others to take part in .

An UPstander is someone who chooses to take a positive stand and act on behalf of themselves and others.

UP2US centres around an interactive, multimedia production that explores issues of identity, prejudice, values and what it means to be an active citizen. The multimedia production is the key to inspiring and empowering young people to do good and spread the message of UP2US virally.

A Shikaya Project

UP2US is a Shikaya project.

Shikaya is a non-profit civil society organisation that recognises the crucial role that teachers can play in deepening and strengthening South Africa’s democracy. As such, Shikaya supports the personal and professional development of teachers to create a South Africa in which young people in schools are inspired and supported to become responsible citizens and future leaders in our democracy, valuing diversity, human rights and peace.

Since 2005, Shikaya has been working with and supporting over 3 000 teachers and education department officials across South Africa through various programmes and partnerships. Over 10 000 young people have been engaging with issues of human rights, democracy and ethical decision making through Shikaya’s programmes.
